At 200 metres above ground at hub height with state-of-the-art wind turbines

EWS erects the highest wind measuring mast in Austria

So-called remote sensing devices (RSD), such as LiDAR and SoDAR, have become established in modern wind measurement. They use laser or sound pulses to measure the wind at the respective location and determine wind speeds, direction and turbulence up to a height of 200 metres. However, in order to produce reliable and bankable wind reports, verification of these systems before and after each measurement is essential.

The EWS Testing Center - the accredited testing centre within the EWS Group - has erected Austria's tallest wind measurement mast to date with a total height of 200 m at the EWS test field in Stetteldorf am Wagram, northwest of Vienna.

The wind measurement mast is the centrepiece of the new EWS Wind Test Site for the purpose of LiDAR and SoDAR verification in accordance with international standards. In this "wind laboratory", remote sensing-based wind measurement devices are tested for proper functioning before and after wind measurement campaigns. The EWS test site offers 360° free airflow and optimum wind conditions at the site. Verifications at a height of 200 metres correspond as closely as possible to the current state of the art and reduce uncertainties in wind measurement campaigns and subsequently in yield assessments.

Mads Nielsen is the team leader for wind measurement technology at EWS: "The 200-metre measuring mast enables us to keep pace with the rapid developments in the wind energy industry by testing remote sensing devices for ever higher wind turbines and ensuring their accuracy."

We can test up to 20 RSD devices in parallel at the EWS test field. This means short verification times for our customers and avoids long and expensive transport routes for RSD devices.

Secure your place at the EWS test field

The EWS Testing Centre has been operating a wind test field in Stetteldorf am Wagram since 2019 and is investing in the future of wind turbines with new verification heights of up to 200 m above sea level.

The new 200-metre-high verification mast is one of the highest wind measurement masts in Central Europe and the only one of its kind in Austria. Take advantage of the nearby location and save time and money thanks to short transport routes.
