Austria's highest wind measurement mast offers state-of-the-art measurement technology.

Opening with LH-Stv. Stephan Pernkopf and Mayor Florian Gold on 28 April 2026 at the EWS test field in Stetteldorf am Wagram.

Measuring devices based on remote sensing, such as LiDAR and SoDAR, have become established in modern wind measurement. They use laser or sound pulses to measure the wind at the respective location and determine wind speeds, direction and turbulence. However, in order to produce reliable wind reports, verification - i.e. checking these systems - is essential before and after each wind measurement. The prerequisite for this is a suitable test field with wind conditions that are as windy and undisturbed as possible and a very high wind measurement mast as a reference standard - a "wind tunnel" in an open field.

The location in Stetteldorf am Wagram offers the best conditions for operating the new wind test field due to the optimal wind climate and the free flow of the wind measuring mast.

LH-Stv. and State Councillor for Energy Stephan Pernkopf: "With the 200 metre high wind measuring mast, we in Lower Austria are clearly demonstrating that we are taking a leading role in modern technologies - just as we are in the expansion of renewable energies. Lower Austria is Austria's green electricity locomotive. With this project, we are creating an important basis for reliable measurements and thus strengthening further expansion. The state government has unanimously increased the expansion targets for wind power, as this will strengthen independence and thus also security."

Mayor of Stetteldorf Florian Gold: "This special feature brings technology companies from the EU to us and creates regional added value."

Property owner Julius Schauerhuber: "For us, the current utilisation is a very good solution. The combination of wind measurement mast and biodiversity area suits us because we can use the area sensibly in two ways. On the one hand, we are making a contribution to the development of the renewable energy sector, while on the other, the agricultural use remains intact."

Wolfgang Neuhofer from the planning office for wind energy and agri-PV systems EWS: "The new verification mast reaches up to the hub heights of the most modern future turbine types and thus significantly increases the bankability for yield assessments and therefore the security for project financing. It is the centrepiece here at the test field, the only one of its kind within a radius of around 500 km."

The EWS Testing Center is the exclusive accredited test centre for wind measurements in Austria and now offers verifications up to 200 m above ground. The EWS wind test field is therefore not only unique in Austria, but also one of only a handful in the whole of Europe.
