Wind power and electric lorries – a great combination!

The route from Vorarlberg to Styria, from one wind measurement site to the next, is just under 600 km long. In keeping with our corporate philosophy, this transport was carried out for the first time using a fully electric lorry.

“I am delighted that we have successfully implemented the switch to e-mobility for our mast transport operations. The electric lorry not only offers environmental benefits but also makes economic sense. We are significantly reducing CO₂ emissions, saving on fuel costs and benefiting from lower toll charges compared to a diesel lorry. Sustainability and cost-effectiveness go hand in hand,” explains Thomas Maier, a metrology engineer and project manager at EWS.

This sustainable transport is made possible by our logistics partner, Breitfuss GmbH from Kapfenberg. The company’s fleet currently comprises six fully electric lorries, which are powered by green electricity via the company’s own high-performance charging station, complete with photovoltaic panels, battery storage and intelligent charging control.

“With our electric articulated lorry, we can save up to 80 per cent on toll costs compared to a diesel lorry. After around 500 kilometres, the vehicle is charged for about an hour – precisely during the time when the driver takes their statutory break,” explains Managing Director Florian Breitfuss.

This example shows that the energy transition extends far beyond electricity generation. Emissions can also be reduced, resources used efficiently and economic benefits achieved in transport and logistics.
