EWS is working with wind farm operators to develop solutions for hybrid wind farms
As part of the workshop organised by IG Windkraft on 27 August 2026, around 40 participants from the renewable energy sector discussed current issues in the specialist areas of ‘Technology’ and ‘energy economics’. One of the speakers was Fabian Bouda, who, as EWS project manager in the ‘Permits, Technology and Operations’ division, will in future also head the ‘Grid Connection’ team formed during the workshop.
What is a ‘hybrid park’?
A hybrid park uses at least two different primary energy sources to generate electricity. The workshop focused on combined wind power and photovoltaic installations. Compared to pure wind or photovoltaic parks, the grid connection is utilised particularly efficiently, thanks to solar power generation during the day – especially in the summer months – and wind power generation, which peaks in winter.
Wind + Sun + Storage: Together, they achieve more.
A BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) can store energy that is not currently needed and, by means of ‘load shifting’, feed it back into the grid when capacity is available and there is high demand for electricity. Furthermore, the BESS can stabilise the grid by being used for flexibility services, e.g. for redispatch and balancing energy. Expanding the system to include storage facilities therefore further increases the efficiency and utilisation of existing grid connections. A hybrid power plant combined with storage thus delivers higher full-load hours and a constant supply for our energy system throughout the year.
In his presentation, Fabian Bouda outlined several use cases and highlighted the current challenges regarding grid connection of hybrid parks. These include, for example, the integration of existing installations into the hybrid park controller, a multitude of interfaces with energy traders, the resizing of existing cables and transformers, and the determination of their remaining service life. The slide specifically illustrates the use case ‘Expansion of a large-scale PV plant to include a wind farm’.
One thing is certain: The energy transition requires intelligent solutions that make optimal use of existing infrastructure and integrate generation, grids and storage.
