Geopolitical tensions and disrupted supply chains have long since ceased to affect only distant regions; instead, they have a direct impact on our everyday lives, our economy and our security of supply. Energy is increasingly becoming a strategic factor in the balance of power, and the energy transition is part of a geopolitical upheaval. How can Austria continue to enjoy a life of peace, prosperity and security in the future?
In “Die Presse”’s Energy Talk, the following experts discuss why the expansion of renewable energies is crucial for security of supply, competitiveness and a sustainable energy system:

Wind power expansion as an opportunity for investment and economic performance in Austria
Statement in Josef Plank’s article: “It is clear to see and feel that global resources are becoming scarce. These bottlenecks very quickly become instruments of power politics in conflicts.”
There is a consensus that decisions regarding a resilient energy system must be taken today, and that only those who generate their own energy can ensure stability and resilience in the long term and in a sustainable manner.
“We can double wind power generation from its current level of just under ten terawatt-hours from scratch over the next few years. Achieving this is a crucial factor. It will also generate enormous added value through its impact on employment and investment,” says Josef Plank, referring to calls from the business and industrial sectors for solutions to the energy issue.
EWS calls for clear guidelines and action rather than words
Alina Mirwald, as a co-owner of EWS, adds another argument: “We would like to see clear and reliable framework conditions, ideally at all political levels – from the federal and state governments through to local authorities and the EU. Domestically produced renewable energy, such as wind power or solar electricity, is an important sector for Austria’s economy, providing many good jobs and supporting successful, innovative companies. We also see that initiatives for renewable energy projects involving wind and solar power often originate from local authorities and committed individuals. Many of them simply do not understand why expansion is still proceeding hesitantly and without clear commitments, or is even being held back.”
In recent years, EWS has increased its workforce to its current level of 100 employees, adapted its organisational structures and invested in process development and sites. For over 30 years, we have been working towards the energy transition and for CO₂-free energy systems in our country and beyond. This is not a pipe dream, but our day-to-day business.
