Ensuring a constant energy supply with BESS Nickelsdorf I and II

The 68 MWh battery storage project adds a key element of flexibility and stability to the existing energy park in Nickelsdorf, which EWS is implementing on behalf of PÜSPÖK. The battery storage system expands the existing energy park, which comprises wind power and agri-photovoltaics, balances out fluctuations in generation and optimises grid feed-in. With the integration of wind power, agri-photovoltaics and battery storage, the Nickelsdorf site is one of Austria’s most advanced hybrid parks. The super-hybrid park, comprising wind power and agri-photovoltaics, is also the second-largest of its kind in Europe.

The collaboration is based on a long-standing partnership with PÜSPÖK. Managing Director Lukas Püspök explains: “Super-hybrid systems make it possible to ensure a reliable supply of renewable energy almost regardless of the weather or time of day.&Energy storage is the next logical step in the energy transition and the cornerstone of a secure and sustainable energy supply. We are delighted to be implementing our project in Nickelsdorf together with our long-standing partner EWS.”

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • EWS took on key construction management services for the battery storage project and played a key role in the grid connection for wind and solar energy.
  • The EWS construction team took care to minimise disruption to existing installations and to avoid damage to components already in place.
  • Through forward-planning and coordination of the individual trades, downtime for existing installations was kept to the absolute minimum.
  • At the time of commissioning, the BESS Nickelsdorf is Austria’s largest battery storage facility.
